Harare, (New Ziana)-National signal carrier, Transmedia Corporation is targeting to increase radio coverage to 81.5 percent to 85 percent and television coverage from 38 percent to 43 percent by the end of the 2026 financial year.
In an interview with journalists on the sidelines of a Corporate Governance Unit (CGU) performance training, Transmedia chief executive officer Adonia Mushosho said the corporation was working on projects to expand both radio and digital television coverage across the country.
“We have put in place projects that will ensure that at the end of the year, this financial year, we are going to be at 85 percent,” he said.
He said the first priority was Montrose in Bulawayo, where old transmitters are being replaced with new ones.
“The exercise is expected to be completed in the next 10 days and will increase coverage to a radius of about 80 km, benefiting large parts of Matabeleland. Transmitters released from Montrose will be redeployed to under-served areas such as Midlands and Mashonaland Central,” he said.
The same upgrade will follow at Mount Darwin in Mashonaland Central province, Mushosho said, with contracts having been signed and payment made, and additional transmitters from the project will be used as “gap fillers” to cover grey areas.
“We have already signed the contract and payment has been made for Mt Darwin. For Montrose, we expect the completion of the exercise in the next 10 days,” he said.
For the 2027 Independence Legacy projects in Masvingo, Transmedia will install FM transmitters at Rutenga, the venue for the 2027 national celebrations, to carry National FM and Radio Zimbabwe while two community radio stations are also targeted for Chivi and Gutu, said Mushosho.
On television, he said five Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) transmitters will be installed this year in Kwekwe, the Midlands province, Bindura in Mashonaland Central, Chikombedzi in Masvingo, and Wedza in Mashonaland East and the equipment has been procured and delivery is expected in October.
Mushosho added that by the first quarter of next year, Transmedia would have installed a total of 10 digital television transmitters, including new sites in Gutu and Chikombedzi.
