BINDURA Municipality has reached a major milestone in addressing the town’s long-standing water challenges, with the construction of the new Masembura water transmission line now nearly 95% complete.
The $3 million alternative water source project—jointly funded by the local authority and Fredda Rebecca Gold Mine—is set to deliver clean, sustainable, and reliable water to the mining town.
The Masembura Pipeline Project is a 22-kilometre water transmission line connecting Masembura Dam to Bindura town, which is expected to solve the town’s long-standing water shortages.
Bindura Municipality spokesperson Spren Mutiwi confirmed to New Ziana that the new transmission line is on the verge of completion and will secure pure drinking water free from industrial pollution.
“This will provide a new water supply that is sustainable and potable, without any contamination from mining activities. Once completed, this will ensure improved water supplies,” Mutiwi said.
While the completion of the Masembura pipeline marks a critical step forward, Mutiwi said the local authority’s focus will now shift toward increasing processing capacity at the municipal water treatment plant.
“The main area of focus will shift to upgrading the plant to ensure we increase water production to at least meet the demand in the entire Bindura Municipality,” he said.
Acknowledging the scale of the required improvements, Mutiwi noted that expanding the plant will require significant financial resources, prompting the council to seek strategic investment.
“This is a capital-intensive project that requires significant funding, but as a local authority, we are determined to look for potential partners to help us finance the water infrastructure,” said the council spokesperson.
Addressing recent service disruptions that left several suburbs without tap water, Mutiwi reassured residents that emergency repairs at the main plant have been completed.
“It is true that recently the water situation affected residents and stakeholders due to a major breakdown at the plant, but we are happy that the main problem has been fully repaired and water production and pumping are now in full swing,” he added.
