BINDURA University of Science Education (BUSE) athlete Polite Moyo has put Zimbabwean university sport in the spotlight by winning a bronze medal in the women’s 800m at the 12th Federation of African University Sports (FASU) Games in Cairo, Egypt.
Moyo’s podium finish came at a major continental university sporting event that brought together student-athletes from across Africa, held from September 8 to 16.
The Cairo Games, the 12th edition of the biennial FASU competition, featured 18 sporting disciplines and attracted university representatives from across the continent. Zimbabwe was among the participating nations.
Moyo’s bronze adds a continental medal to an already impressive 2026 campaign, in which she has established herself as one of Zimbabwe’s leading university middle-distance athletes.
According to BUSE, Moyo had earlier won four gold medals at the Zimbabwe Universities Sports (ZUS) Games, three gold medals at the Zimbabwe Tertiary Sports (ZITS) Games, and another gold at the regional games in Botswana.
Her FASU achievement also comes at a time when BUSE is enjoying a strong run in university sports.
The institution recently reported an impressive medal haul at the Zimbabwe Tertiary Institutions Sports Union Games, winning eight gold and four silver medals. BUSE also collected eight gold, five silver, and three bronze medals at the Zimbabwe University Sports Association Games.
Moyo’s bronze, therefore, represents a continuation of BUSE’s growing presence beyond the domestic university sports scene and onto the continental stage.
The Cairo Games were particularly significant for African university sport, with Egypt hosting the All Africa University Games for the first time since FASU was established in 1971. The 2026 edition was also part of the celebrations marking FASU’s 55th anniversary.
While a comprehensive final medal tally for Zimbabwe was not readily available in the published FASU results, Moyo’s bronze is a confirmed Zimbabwean success from the Games.
The BUSE athlete was also scheduled to compete in the 1500m, giving her another opportunity to add to her continental medal tally.
