ZIMBABWEAN athletes Ashley Miller and Makanakaishe Charamba fell short of reaching the finals at the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championship in Budapest, Hungary. Still, their appearance at this elite global showcase represents another significant step in their development.
The two athletes were among the world’s leading competitors invited to the prestigious event, which brought together Olympic champions, world champions, and Diamond League winners in a new format designed to highlight the world’s best athletes.
Charamba, who has enjoyed an impressive season, came closest to securing a place in the men’s 200m final, finishing fifth in the second semi-final with a time of 20.13 seconds on Sunday.
Only the top four athletes from each semi-final advanced to the final, leaving Charamba just outside the qualification spots.
Miller’s campaign ended in the women’s 400m semi-finals on Saturday after she finished sixth in the first heat with a time of 54.23 seconds.
Despite missing out on the finals, their participation provided valuable exposure against some of the biggest names in world athletics and highlighted Zimbabwe’s growing presence on the international stage.
National Athletics Association of Zimbabwe Director of Coaching, Talent Identification, and Development, Phakamile Lisimati, described the presence of the two athletes at the championship as a major achievement for the country.
“Actually, we had three athletes invited. Unfortunately, one was unable to attend due to visa issues and travel restrictions,” said Lisimati.
“We are quite impressed and happy as an association, especially from the coaching perspective, that we now have athletes who are selected and recognised on the ultimate world stage.
“Receiving an invitation to this championship is a big achievement, and it makes us proud as Zimbabweans that we are counted among the world’s top athletes and top athletics nations.”
Lisimati also congratulated both athletes for their efforts in Budapest, stressing that reaching the semi-finals at such a high-level competition was, in itself, an important achievement.
“I want to congratulate the two athletes, Makanakaishe Charamba and Ashley Miller, for their performance at the championship. They both bowed out in the semi-finals, but that is a very good performance. I am sure that in the next championship, they will do even better and reach the final,” he said.
For Charamba and Miller, the Budapest experience offers more than just competition results.
It gives the pair an opportunity to measure themselves against the world’s best, gain experience from competing on one of athletics’ biggest stages, and build their profiles as Zimbabwe continues to search for a new generation of international athletics stars.
With both athletes still seeking to establish themselves among the global elite, their invitation to the Ultimate Championship could prove to be an important chapter in their respective careers.
