BLANKET Mine coach Luke Petros and prolific striker Mathew Hlabathi have been honoured for their outstanding performances after being named the Roonies Coach of the Month and YaFM Player of the Month respectively for August.
Petros has guided Blanket Mine to a strong run of form that has seen the team move five points clear at the top of the Central Region Soccer League (CRSL) standings, while Hlabathi has been among the league’s most prolific scorers this season.
Petros has also guided Blanket Mine into the quarter-finals of the Munhumutapa Challenge Cup, where they will face Premier Soccer League side FC Platinum between October 2 and 4.
Hlabathi, who has been scoring consistently throughout the season, is the CRSL’s leading scorer with 16 goals from 26 matches.
Petros said the award was a recognition of the hard work being put in by his technical team and players.
“As coaches, this is a tool for recognition which also enlightens us on how we should continue doing good things.
“These are the things we need to keep doing well while fighting for the championship,” he said.
Petros thanked the sponsors and the selection panel for their efforts in recognising and motivating players and coaches.
Hlabathi said he was delighted with the award and was determined to maintain his scoring form as he targets the CRSL Golden Boot.
“I am glad with this award. It is not easy, but it is a result of hard work and, above all, I thank God. My wish is to continue scoring more goals,” he said.
Hlabathi is chasing the Golden Boot previously won by Wilfred Madzungu, who scored 25 goals last season. Madzungu has since joined Hardrock FC.
Dulibadzimu United goalkeeper Prince Mujuru was also recognised after being named the Jutan Printers Goalkeeper of the Month.
Blanket Mine were sitting at the top of the 18-team table on 64 points after 26 matches, five points ahead of second-placed Kwekwe United, who have 59 points. Chapungu are third on 57 points.
At the bottom, Matobo are 18th with 11 points, while Shurugwi occupy 17th place with 15 points.
Vhembe Stars and Midlands State University complete the relegation positions on 21 and 23 points respectively.
