MUTARE- It was a familiar feeling for Zimbabwean cricket fans across the country yesterday, hope, belief, then heartbreak.
At Harare Sports Club and in homes from Bulawayo to Mutare, supporters watched Sikandar Raza drag Zimbabwe to the brink of a famous win, only for Australia to snatch a one-wicket victory in a thrilling third ODI.
Zimbabwe posted 271 for 8, anchored by Raza’s unbeaten 81, Craig Ervine’s composed 59 and Innocent Kaia’s 55 retired hurt. With Brad Evans tearing through the Australian top order to claim 4 for 47, the Chevrons sensed a consolation win in front of a packed home crowd.
For a moment, it looked possible.
But Josh Inglis had other ideas. His 103 kept Australia in the chase, before Nathan Ellis who had earlier taken 3 for 50 returned with the bat to hammer an unbeaten 36 and guide the visitors to 272 for 9.
The final wicket stand left the Sports Club stunned.
On social media, frustration and pride mixed in equal measure. Fans praised Raza’s fight and Evans’ breakthrough spell, while lamenting another close defeat that has defined Zimbabwe’s recent run against top sides.
The result sealed a 3-0 series whitewash for Australia on their first tour to Zimbabwe in 12 years, but for many supporters, the performance offered more than the scoreline suggested.
In beerhalls, living rooms and fan parks, the conversation the sentiment was the same, Zimbabwe can compete. The next step is learning how to win.
