Harare, (New Ziana) – President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Wednesday called on Zimbabweans to be on “high security alert” in wake of the insurgency in Mozambique to which he advocated for a “robust regional response” to the disturbances.

The Southern African Development Community last week directed “an immediate technical deployment” to the gas rich-northern province to help it ward off the insurgency.

It’s estimated over 3 000 innocent people, including Zimbabweans, have been killed while over 700 000 have been displaced.

Addressing the 351th ordinary session of the Zanu PF Politburo, President Mnangagwa said peace and unity were key for the region’s development.

“As a party, we remain emboldened by the Pan African ideals of collective peace and harmony as well as the belief that unity is fundamental for sustainable economic, socio and political progress in our region and on our continent,” he said.

“An attack on one is an attack on all of us in SADC. United we stand, hence we cannot sit back and allow the insurgency to continue without a robust regional response.”

He called communities to be on “high security alert.”

“Lets us continue to jealousy guard the peace and stability that is existing and which we enjoy in our great country,” President Mnangagwa said.

The Zimbabwean government, he said, was working with authorities in Mozambique to establish the number of Zimbabweans affected by the disturbances.

The continued disturbances in the neighbouring country, he said, were in spite of a United Nations declaration of 2021 as the “International Year of Peace and Trust.”

“Insurgencies are threatening to slow down and reverse our collective efforts to achieve the aspirations outlined in the UN SDGs, the AU Agenda 2063 and within Sadc,” he said.

Meanwhile, President Mnangagwa called on Zanu PF leadership to ensure implementation and delivery of party programmes to gain more votes in the 2023 elections.

The party is aiming to get at least five million votes.
