Anglican Church builds school in Gokwe

Share

Gokwe (New Ziana) – The Anglican Church has built a state-of-the-art secondary school in Gokwe which is due to open shortly in answer to government calls for private investors to assist in its efforts to ensure all children have access to basic education.

The school, named Holy Cross, has been built at Gokwe Centre, and is expected to be opened shortly.

It is the church’s second secondary school in the Midlands Province, the other being Patrick’s High School in Chiwundura.

Bishop Ignatius Makumbe of the church said demand for education services in Gokwe was high, and both government and the local community were pressing the church to complete the project.

Completion of construction of the school was held up by Covid-19.

“In Gokwe, we have so much pressure from the local community and the (Education) Ministry is on our heels so we are working hard to make sure that that school is up and running so that we reduce the pressure we have,” Bishop Makumbe said.

He said the church also planned to build new schools in Kadoma, Gweru, Kariba and Kwekwe.

The government has embarked on expanding education services through construction of new schools, especially in resettlement areas, and has called on private investors to come in and complement its efforts.
