Beitbridge – June 30 was marked by renewed anti-foreigner demonstrations in parts of South Africa as members of the March and Dudula movements took to the streets calling for all African foreign nationals to leave the country.
Chanting “Abahambe” (They must go), protesters marched through several communities, with some taxi ranks recording reduced activity while a number of Pakistani-owned shops and businesses remained closed.
Addressing demonstrators, movement representative Jacinta Ngobese- Zuma said the campaign would not end on June 30 but would continue every Thursday until all undocumented foreign nationals had left South Africa. Responding to concerns from marchers who alleged that some police officers were accepting bribes from undocumented migrants, she pledged to raise the matter in Parliament, calling for an audit into the conduct and finances of law enforcement officers.
Meanwhile, Zimbabwean nationals continued returning home through Beitbridge Border Post as authorities processed increasing numbers of returnees. Government has maintained support services at the border to facilitate the orderly reception and reintegration of citizens returning from South Africa.
