Harare (New Ziana)- Preparations for the annual Anti-Sanctions Day to be held in Mutoko on Wednesday are at an advanced stage with two main highlights earmarked to headline the event.
At the 39th summit in Tanzania in 2019, Southern African Development Community (SADC) leaders adopted a resolution declaring 25 October of every year Anti Sanctions Day in support of calls for the illegal embargo to be lifted as it is affecting the whole region.
The United States passed the Zimbabwe Democracy and Economic Recovery Act (ZIDERA) in 2001 that cut all lines of credit from multilateral institutions.
SADC states will be holding various activities in their respective countries on the day and call for ther removal of the illegal sanctions which have deterred economic growth and caused Zimbabweans to relocate to neighbouring countries and abroad in search of better conditions.
Director for international communication services in the Ministry of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Richard Mahomva said a march will be held at Mutoko Centre and an exhibition at Gohori Logde also at the business centre.
Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Dr Jenfan Muswere will officiate at the Expo whilst Minister of State for Provincial Affairs for Mashonaland East, Dr Aplonia Munzverengwi will be the guest of honour at the march, said Mahomva.
The traditional media dialogue where the members of the fraternity discuss resolutions on how they can better project their anti-sanctions messaging will also take place as well as the business dialogue which will feature two university Vice Chancellors, Professor Pardon from Lupane State University (LSU) and Professor Albert Chawanda from Mutare State University and the permanent secretary for Sports, Arts and Culture Nicholas Moyo among other high profile dignitaries.
“Most prominently we are also going to have a march on the 25th in Mutoko Centre as a means of expressing our solidarity to the policing of the Second Republic that has been able to withstand the effects of the sanctions, so that will be the general thrust of the march,” said Mahomva.
He said they have received overwhelming support from the office of the Minister of State for Mashonaland East, Dr Aplonia Munzverengwi whom he said has been very generous with her time and wisdom in ensuring that they mobilise relevant numbers to express solidarity on the day.
“Given that also, in terms of the political prominence of the province, it has been a mobilising front for the nationalist movement as far as our elections are concerned,” Mahomva said.
Mahomva said the event has been taken to Mutoko this year in line with the devolution of national events.
