Harare (New Ziana) –The upsurge in violent crimes and armed robberies poses a threat to national security, but the country’s security forces will deal with perpetrators in equal measure, President Emmerson Mnangagwa has declared.
Zimbabwe has witnessed a sharp increase in armed robberies, with the thieves targeting people who store large amounts of cash either at their homes or businesses.
The police have however been mostly equal to the task, apprehending or killing some of the perpetrators in shootouts.
But, President Mnangagwa said there was need to increase vigilance to rid the country of the growing menace.
“Lately, we have witnessed an upsurge in gun-related crimes. There is a clear upsurge in abuse of firearms, including violent armed robberies,” he said.
“Government now treats this as a grave threat to personal and National Security. Decisive measures have now become necessary to put an end to this growing menace which threatens our otherwise peaceful, law-abiding nation and citizenry. Those who dabble in arms, will soon fall by the sword. Let them be warned.”
