Harare (New Ziana) – The Broadcasting Authority of Zimbabwe (BAZ) has awarded three new community radio licenses as part of the government’s all-inclusive development agenda.

The licensees were given to Shashe community covering the Beitbridge/Shashe area, Chiredzi’s Avuxeni FM covering Chikombedzi, Chiredzi, Rutenga, Mahenye and Malipati areas and Lyeja-Nyayi Development Trust operating in the Hwange and Victoria Falls area.

Additionally, BAZ also issued three campus radio licences to the National University of Science and Technology, Lupane State University and Harare Polytechnic College.

“After licencing, the stations should be operating within 18 months, failure of which the licences will be automatically revoked as stipulated in the Broadcasting Services Act,” BAZ said.

As part of media reforms being pursued by the government, BAZ also awarded six new free-to-air television licences to independent broadcasters, late last year.

The six, who were chosen from 14 applicants, are Jester Media (Private) Limited which will be operating as 3K TV, Zimbabwe Newspapers (1980) Limited as ZTN, Rusununguko Media (Private) Limited as NRTV, Acacia Media Group as Kumba TV, Fairtalk Communications (Private ) Limited as Ke Yona TV and Channel Dzimbahwe as Channel D.
