Harare (New Ziana) – The Broadcasting Authority of Zimbabwe (BAZ) on Friday awarded six new free-to-air television licences to independent broadcasters, completing a licensing process that began early this year.

The six, who were chosen from 14 applicants, are Jester Media (Private) Limited which will be operating as 3K TV, Zimbabwe Newspapers (1980) Limited as ZTN, Rusununguko Media (Private) Limited as NRTV, Acacia Media Group as Kumba TV, Fairtalk Communications (Private ) Limited as Ke Yona TV and Channel Dzimbahwe as Channel D.

BAZ board chairman Charles Manzi Sibanda said the successful applicants were expected to start broadcasting within 18 months.

“In the event of failure to broadcast, the licenses would be availed to other aspirants through a similar process,” he said.

The licensing of the new television stations is part of media reforms being pursued by the government.
