MARONDERA– Most farmers who were part of those who benefited from the Presidential Climate-Proofed Inputs Scheme, widely known as Pfumvudza/Intwasa programme, applauded the Government for distributing the inputs on time.

This move by the Government, they said, will boost their planning and plant on time once the climatic conditions become conducive.

Last week, Mashonaland East province launched the programme for the 2024/ 2025 season in Goromonzi district’s Ward 16. The event saw the beneficiaries receiving inputs as well as chicks under the Presidential Poultry Scheme.

As the Pfumvudza/Intwasa programme has proved to be a major contributor to be a major contributor to food security at household level, the Government continues to support the initiative which was launched at provincial level at Brighton Chibhamu’s homestead in Ward 16 of Goromonzi district last week.

Grace Kamuzangaza who was among the beneficiaries thanked the Government for the programme.

She said: “Over the years, I have been benefitting from this programme and as a youth, I thank President (Emmerson) Mnangagwa and the Government for always assisting us in farming seasons. Although we did not produce good yields owing to drought last season, signs are that this time around, we will have a bumper harvest.”

Another beneficiary, Isaac Matizanadzo also spoke glowingly about the programme.

“As farmers, we need to be innovative in these unpredictable seasons. The Government has been assisting us through the provision of inputs as well as urging us to be innovative so that we reduce the impacts of climatic shocks to our communities,” he said.

Aaron Shamu, the councilor for Ward 16 called upon farmers who will benefit from the programme to put the inputs to good use.

At the launch of the provincial Pfumvudza/Intwasa programme, inputs were distributed to beneficiaries who prepared their plots.

Another beneficiary, Ray Tomondo said since its launch, he has been religiously involved in the programme.

“In recent years, I am one of the rural farmers who have been benefiting from inputs provided by the Government. I have managing to harvest something every season and my family has never starved. I urge fellow farmers to embrace the programme so that each household can be food-secure,” he said.

Regina Jonga, another farmer applauded the timely distribution of the Pfumvudza/Intwasa programme inputs.

She said: “The good thing is that the Government will be distributing the inputs to all beneficiaries on time and the programme has been helping us to starve off hunger. I prepared my plots and just like any other communal farmer, we are waiting for the rains so that we can start planting.”

Speaking at the launch of the programme, Agricultural and Rural Development Advisory Services (ARDAS) acting provincial director Tetiwe Mupakwe commended the timey distribution of inputs and urged the beneficiaries to continue working hard and ensure food security at household level.

Mupakwe thanked President Mnangagwa for coming up with the programme to end hunger and starvation saying: “I also thank you, our farmers, for the preparations you are making, and have made for the coming summer cropping season. Make more plots so as to increase your yields.”

Mupakwe added that Government had introduced several programmes that support farmers for the nation to be food secure urging them to embrace these programmes to ensure Zimbabwe is food-secure.

Several blueprints that will lead to the attainment of Vision 2030 and build resilience to numerous climatic shocks being experienced have been lined up.

The Government’s based approach schemes are meant to help the impact of the climatic changes affecting the nation. These include the, the Presidential Climate-Proofed Cotton Scheme, the Presidential Rural Development Programme, Presidential Climate-Proofed Inputs Scheme the Presidential Blitz Tick Grease Scheme, the Presidential Community Fisheries Scheme, the Presidential Poultry Scheme and the Vision 2030 Accelerator Model (V30 Accelerator), among others.

“This year, it is predicted that we will receive good favorable rainfall. Last season, rainfall distribution across the province and the country at large, was very poor both in space and time. This resulted in crop failure last season hence households became food and nutrition insecure. This calls for all stakeholders in the agriculture sector to join hands and employ all the necessary technologies and techniques to produce enough food to feed the province and the nation,” Mupakwe added.

The up scaling of the Pfumvudza/Intwasa concept, irrigation and mechanisation developments to augment crop production through soil moisture retention for crop use and expediting farming operations respectively will go a long way in mitigating the effects of drought.

Climate-smart agriculture, as an approach, seeks to sustainably increase agricultural productivity, enhances resilience and adaptation and promotes achievement of provincial and national food and nutrition security.
