Harare, (New Ziana) – A man from Buhera, Manicaland province, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for rape.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) the Buhera magistrates court convicted the male adult, whose identity has been withheld to protect the victim, following a full trial after the prosecution presented overwhelming evidence against him.
The victim, whose identity has also been protected due to the nature of the crime, testified against the man, detailing the ordeal and the trauma she endured.
Medical and forensic reports submitted to the court corroborated the victim’s claims, further strengthening the prosecution’s case, while witness testimonies also played a crucial role in the conviction.
In delivering the sentence, the presiding magistrate emphasized the severity of the crime and the need for justice to be served.
During sentencing, the magistrate condemned accused’s actions, stating that sexual violence has no place in society and should be met with stiff punishment. In handing down the 20-year prison sentence, the magistrate took into account aggravating factors, including the vulnerability of the victim and the accused’s lack of remorse.
He further stated that the judiciary would continue to uphold the law and ensure justice for victims of sexual violence. The ruling aligns with Zimbabwe’s laws on sexual offenses, which prescribe lengthy sentences for rape to discourage such crimes.
Organizations advocating for the rights of women and children in Zimbabwe have urged the government to strengthen support systems for survivors of sexual violence. They have called for better access to counselling, medical care, and legal assistance to help victims recover from such traumatic experiences.
Authorities in the district have also urged residents to report cases of sexual violence promptly, while community leaders have been encouraged to work closely with authorities to create a safer environment for vulnerable groups, including women and children.
