Harare (New Ziana) – Cabinet held its last meeting of the year on Tuesday, with President Emerson Mnangagwa expressing satisfaction over the work done by government during 2020.

The year 2020 has been a difficult one, mainly because of the Covid-19 pandemic, but government has managed to pursue various development projects using own funds.

Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Monica Mutsvangwa said President Mnangagwa was pleased with the work of government.

“Chief among these being infrastructural projects such as Beit Bridge- Harare- Chirundu Highway and other trunk roads, dams also and boreholes,” she said during a post Cabinet briefing.

“Successes in the agricultural sector such as the Pfumvudza programme and also repeal of AIPPA and other media reforms were also highlighted.”

Mutsvangwa added: “Cabinet received a report on the status of Projects of National Importance as presented by the Minister of Higher and Tertiary Education, Science and Technology Development. The Ministry of Higher and Tertiary Education, Innovation, Science and Technology Development is implementing Heritage Based Education 5.0 where key pillars are teaching, research, community service, innovation and industralisation. The education is designed to give the nation the necessary capability to attain Vision 2030 through modernisation and industrialization.

“The projects of national importance being implemented are the development and adoption of Life Technologies, Innovation Hubs/Industrial Parks, National Strategic Institutions Programme, Internationalisation of Zimbabwe’s Higher and Tertiary Education Institutions, Geospatial Aeronautical and Space Service Capability, and Infrastructure Development.”

Meanwhile, Mutsvangwa said Cabinet had been notified that the World Health Organisation (WHO) had published new guidelines to assist countries in the management of COVID-19 cases.

“The guidelines place Zimbabwe in Category CT2, which includes countries experiencing moderate local transmission. The country is positioned under Level 3. Comparatively, countries with very high incidences of local transmissions are placed under category CT4.

“For countries in Level 3, like Zimbabwe, WHO recommends that citizens should apply individual precautionary measures, such as hand hygiene, cough etiquette, isolating at home if unwell, wearing masks where appropriate, physical social distancing and avoiding the ‘3Cs’ (Crowded places, Close contact settings and Confined/enclosed spaces with poor ventilation); childcare services, primary and secondary schools should remain open, with adequate safety and surveillance measures in place while evaluating sporting and other social gatherings, using risk-based approaches.”
