MARONDERA- Efforts by a Harare man to make good his escape from the police ended tragically after he drowned in Mupfure River in the Beatrice area of Seke district.

The man had been caught stealing cables at Beatrice Bridge.

As confirmed by Mashonaland East provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Simon Chazovachiyi, Nomatter Chipembere (45) of Dzivaresekwa Extension, Harare was last week Tuesday found floating by residents in the river.

The deceased and his accomplice are reported to have dived into the river while their third accomplice was arrested after they were found stealing Liquid cables on the previous day.

Inspector Chazovachiyi appealed for the public to timeously report cases of vandalism of public structures and also appealed for information that may lead to the arrest of the other two suspects.

“Causing damage to, or stealing utilities that are meant for the public is a serious offense. Whenever people see someone vandalizing public structures, they should immediately report such acts so that the offenders can be brought to book and face justice.

“In this case, one of the people who had been found stealing cables drowned and we are now appealing for information that can assist us as we aim to bring his accomplices to book,” he said.
