Gweru(The Times-New Ziana) -The relegation of Gweru-based Premier Soccer League teams Chapungu and TelOne has disappointed many football fans as they were anticipating the city to have three teams in the group next season.
The development leaves the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service outfit, Whawha FC being the only PSL team in Gweru and the second team in the Midlands province after Zvishavane based FC Platinum which won the league title for the third consecutive season.
Chapungu, affectionately known as Waru Waru and TelOne, also called the Wifi Boys, were both relegated on the final day of the 2019 Castle Lager Premier Soccer League season.
The two teams joined Hwange and Mushowani Stars to the unfashionable Division One league.
TelOne, who got promoted into the top-flight league last year, finished the season in 15th place after losing 4-1 to Chicken Inn.
Even their highly rated coaches Rahman Gumbo and Llyod Mutasa could not save the team from the dreaded chop.
Chapungu, who needed an outright victory to avaoid relegation, settled for a 2-2- draw against visiting Highlanders at Ascot Stadium.
A disappointed Chipo Mutekesa of Mtapa high density suburb in the city said: “I thought we had been blessed to have three Premier Soccer League teams in Gweru but alas, it was not to be. This is sad news to us football lovers in Gweru.”
“At least we have Whawha FC in the Premier Soccer League and we hope that they will live up to expectations and survive relegation. We also pray that Chapungu and TelOne will correct their mistakes and bounce back in the near future,” she said.
Another soccer fan Khumbulani Mlambo of Mambo said it is was a painful experience for relegation of two teams from the same city as there would be less entertainment during weekends.
