Cheziya High in Italy for Chess Championships

Gokwe (New Ziana) – After missing out on the August 2023 World Schools Team Chess Championships in Kazakhstan, a Cheziya High School chess team is in Italy, for the World Youth Chess Championships.

The Zimbabwe schools champions, from rural Gokwe, are oozing with confidence that they will emerge victorious at the tournament which will run from November 12 to 25.

Cheziya High School were crowned champions of the 2023 Crystal Candy National Schools Chess League Finals Secondary Boys Category and the best placed school in the National Association of Secondary Heads (NASH) national individual scholars championships.

The team, which had the honour of meeting the Italian Ambassador Umberto Malnati at the Embassy before their departure to Italy, is made up of Ezywell Mutema, Ishmael Henry Kaitano, Gamuchirai Gogoma, and coach Blessing Jemani.

Ezywell will play in the Under 14 category, Gamuchirai in the Under 18 girls category and Ishmael in the Under 18 boys category.

Speaking to New Ziana, Jemani said they were confident of bringing positive results from Italy.

“We are going into a tough terrain. This is the biggest tournament at youth level. We want to create a positive impression in the sport for our country and will give our best. This is our year,” said Jemani.
