ZIMBABWEAN football turns its attention to the Chibuku Super Cup quarter-finals this weekend, with eight teams remaining in the race for cup glory and a place in the last four.
The quarter-finals, spread across Saturday, Sunday, and Wednesday, have produced a fascinating mix of established giants, ambitious challengers, and potential giant-killers, setting the stage for a thrilling battle for the Chibuku Super Cup crown.
The action gets underway on Saturday, September 12, when CAPS United host ZPC Kariba at Rufaro Stadium at 3 pm.
The Green Machine is expected to carry the momentum from its impressive 3-2 victory over Simba Bhora in the previous round. However, ZPC Kariba has already demonstrated that it cannot be taken lightly, having eliminated Ngezi Platinum Stars 1-0.
Sunday features a highly anticipated double-header.
At Rufaro Stadium, Dynamos take on FC Hunters at 3 pm, with the holders continuing their defence of the trophy.
DeMbare stormed into the quarter-finals with a commanding 4-1 victory over TelOne and will be chasing another deep run in a competition they have dominated in recent years. Dynamos have also gone 14 consecutive Chibuku Super Cup matches without defeat, underscoring their pedigree in the tournament.
But FC Hunters arrive as one of the competition’s surprise packages after eliminating Herentals College 1-0 in the previous round.
The other Sunday encounter takes place at Barbourfields Stadium, where the Highlanders face MWOS at 3 pm.
Bosso survived a tense Bulawayo derby against Chicken Inn, progressing 3-1 on penalties after the match ended goalless in regulation.
Meanwhile, MWOS booked its place in the last eight with a convincing 2-0 victory over Agama, making the Barbourfields showdown another intriguing clash between experience and ambition.
The quarter-final programme will then conclude on Wednesday, September 16, with arguably the biggest fixture of the round.
Scottland face Hardrock at Rufaro Stadium at 3 pm in a mouth-watering contest between two of the country’s leading sides.
The fixture carries added intrigue due to the teams’ strong league campaigns and the growing rivalry between them. Scottland, the reigning Chibuku Super Cup champions, has already shown its attacking credentials by beating FC Platinum 3-1 in the previous round, while Hardrock edged Bulawayo Chiefs 1-0.
For both sides, however, there is more than a semi-final place at stake.
Scottland and Hardrock remain among the teams competing on multiple fronts, meaning Wednesday’s cup showdown could significantly impact their hopes of ending the season with silverware.
With CAPS United, Dynamos, and Highlanders providing the traditional big-club presence, while ZPC Kariba, FC Hunters, MWOS, and Hardrock seek to upset the established order, the quarter-finals have all the ingredients of a memorable cup weekend.
And with the knockout format leaving no room for second chances, the message to all eight teams is simple: win or go home.
