Harare (New Ziana)-The City of Harare said on Thursday plans to carry out major repairs on trunk water mains over the coming weekend which will result in supply disruptions in some areas.

In a notice, town clerk Engineer Phakamile Moyo said the repair works would be undertaken starting from Friday at 6 PM until Monday at 6 AM.

“The City of Harare would like to advise its valued stakeholders that there shall be major pipeline repairs on inter-connectors to Lochinvar, at Golden Quarry, the chamber at Longchen and Corner Herbert Chitepo and Harare Street,” he said.

Moyo said areas that would be affected included the Central Business District, Marlborough, Westgate, the Avenues, Parirenyatwa Hospital, Milton Park, Malbereign, Tynwald, Warren Park, Westlea, Dzivarasekwa, Avondale, Mt Pleasant and the surrounding northern suburbs.

“The chamber at the corner of Herbert Chitepo and Harare Streets will necessitate a road closure therefore motorists are advised to use alternative routes. Stakeholders are encouraged to use water sparingly during the period,” he said.

The water and sewer reticulation system in Harare, like in most other cities and towns, is old resulting in pipe bursts and leakages.

Large volumes of treated water are lost through the leakages while raw sewerage flows in streets and yards in some suburbs.
