Share

ONE artisanal gold miner died while his accomplice is recuperating from injuries after being
trapped by a collapsed mine shaft at Garati Mine near the Zimbabwe Ezekiel Guti University
(ZEGU) last Saturday.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police identified the dead man as Norman David (23) of Chionde
Village under Chief Mutumba in Madziwa.
Sergeant Major Samuel Chikasha, the acting provincial police spokesperson told Nehanda
Guardian that on 26 November, David and Blessed Kadzomba (23) also of Chionde Village
proceeded to Garati Mine at around 8pm for gold panning.
However, while in the middle of their search of the precious stone, the shaft collapsed on them
burying them alive.
Gwinyai Musanonoka (37) another artisanal miner at the same site heard the mine collapsing and
mobilised fellow artisanal miners to retrieve the two and transport them to Bindura Hospital.
David, however, died on admission at the hospital.
Sgt Maj Samuel Chikasha urged miners to always consider their safety first and engage in safe
operations to ensure that their working spaces are clear of danger.
