Deputy Mayor to prioritise women

Share

GWERU – Recently elected Gweru deputy mayor Nyaradzo Madzikura will have a deliberate bias
towards service delivery issues that promote women during her tenure.
Speaking during a post-election discussion organised by Tellzim News Madzikura said although she
will work with both genders, she will have a bias toward women's issues as they have been left out.
“I would like to see women get stands, malls and other benefits that help uplift them,” she said.
Madzikura also challenged women's organisations to play their part in uplifting women.
“Women organisations must come up with projects that help uplift women,” she said.
Ward 1 councillor Mercy Mangwanya said women were most affected by service delivery issues.
“We currently have water challenges and without water the city’s health is compromised.
“Women spend hours on end in borehole queues and this is an issue that should be addressed,” she
said.
Mangwanya said they were experiencing home deliveries in her ward as there were no maternity
services in Pfende and Greenvale ward 1.
Another female councillor Faith Tshuma of Ward 2 said women need education and knowledge on
proper ways to dispose diapers and sanitary pads.
“Women have been found wanting in as far as the disposal of diapers and sanitary pads is
concerned. We are contributing to an unhealthy environment,” she said.
Residents at the discussion called on council to work towards providing water and market stalls to
end the continued cat and mouse between municipal police and vendors.
