Harare, (New Ziana) – The truck driver responsible for
an accident that killed six people and injured 50 last August when he
lost control of the vehicle on a steep slope along the Nyanga-Rwenya
road has been jailed to an effective four years imprisonment.
The Nyanga Magistrates’ Court convicted Taziva on six counts of culpable
homicide, according to the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe
(NPAZ).
The State case was that on August 13 last year, Taziva was driving a
Hino truck with 58 passengers along the Nyanga-Rwenya Road when he lost
control on a steep descent near Tangwena Turn-off.
The truck veered off the road and threw the passengers onto the tarmac
resulting in the instant deaths of four, while two more died at Nyanga
District Hospital. Fifty others were injured.
The court ruled that Taziva was negligent in driving at an excessive
speed, failure to control the vehicle and was driving recklessly.
Meanwhile, the NPAZ said the same court jailed Regis Svondo (49) to six
months in prison for unlawful entry and theft. The charges stem from an
incident in which Svondo on February 3 entered a room and stole a laptop
worth US$650 at the Nyanga District Hospital.
Ernest Tsakatsa, the owner of the laptop, returned to the room and found
it missing and reported the theft to the police in Nyanga.
The following day, Svondo was arrested following a tip-off after it
emerged that he was selling a password-locked laptop.
