Easter holiday road accidents claim 30

Share

Harare (New Ziana) – At least 30 people were killed in 288 road traffic accidents over the Easter holiday period, police have said.

Another 153 were injured in the road accidents between last Friday and Monday this week, police said.

The most tragic of the accidents was the head-on collision of two commuter buses along the Harare-Masvingo highway on Friday, which claimed the lives of 10 passengers, and injured 31.

However, this year’s Easter holiday road accident fatalities were down more than half last year’s 73 deaths and 202 injuries.

National police spokesperson, Paul Nyathi said most of the fatal road traffic accidents were recorded at night.

“It is disturbing to note that some of the accidents recorded during the period are attributed to human error, which includes speeding, inattention, misjudgement, and failure to observe road rules and regulations, by drivers,” he said.

“Most fatal road traffic accidents recorded occurred during the night where travellers were moving in numbers with vehicles overloaded, mixing goods and passengers, in the process ignoring safety measures,” he said.

With the country heading towards another national holiday, Independence Day next week, police implored all motorists to drive responsibly.

“Let us all play our part to make roads safe and not death traps, above all drivers should comply with all road rules and regulations in order to safeguard lives,” he added.
