Fear grips Svosve after gruesome murder

Marondera, (New Ziana) – Svosve community in Mashonaland East is in a state of shock following the murder of one of Chief Svosve’s aides by a local man who was allegedly wanted by the police in connection with an assault case that took place in the area recently.

But the family of slain Kennedy Nyandoro is accusing police of causing his death.

Nyandoro, of Chikanga Village under Chief Svosve, died in cold blood on August 09 after allegedly being stabbed on the throat by the suspect only identified as Jayi who resides in Mupazviripo Village also under Chief Svosve.

Although police in Mashonaland East refused to shed light on the case, members of the community alleged that the accused had three other pending cases ranging from murder, attempted murder and assault which had taken place in the area.

He allegedly killed his child by hitting him on the ground two years ago, allegedly stabbed a fellow villager several times last year in a suspected attempted murder attack, allegedly assaulted a female bar lady at Muvevi Shopping centre in Mupazviripo Village some few days before stabbing the deceased, a case he was now wanted by the police for.

The police’s inaction, after the accused’s long list of cases, had the community now suspecting he possessed juju which was making it possible for him to avoid arrest.

“Jayi has committed serious crimes here, but what surprises all of us here is that whenever he is arrested, he does not spend much time before he is released back into the community where he continues to terrorise us. His mother, for example, has known no peace as she is subjected to constant beatings by him,” said one villager.

On the fateful day, the deceased Nyandoro was at Dhirihori Shopping Centre in the company of Chief Svosve when some police officers approached them seeking directions to the suspect’s place, and Nyandoro volunteered to accompany them.

When they reached Mupazviripo village, the police officers approached the Shambare homestead near the accused’s place, to inquire about Jayi’s whereabouts, leaving the now deceased standing by the roadside alone nearby.

The deceased noticed Jayi, who was following the search party behind, and grabbed him, and called the police officers.

Jayi alledly drew a knife and stabbed Nyandoro, ripping his throat in the process before disappearing into the darkness.

Chaminuka News visited the crime scene and witnessed the deceased’s blood which was splashed all over place.

The newspaper also attended the funeral wake of the deceased where a sombre atmosphere characterised the scene.

Speaker after speaker praised Nyandoro for his bravery, hard work and patriotism.

Samson Nyandoro, the deceased’s father, said he was at a loss of words following the demise of his son, and blamed the police for his death.

“My son was not a member of the neighbourhood watch committee, and why did the police choose to be accompanied by him to apprehend a dangerous criminal like this one?”

“Right now we have delayed his burial as we were waiting for the arrival of police officers to come and address mourners here concerning circumstances surrounding his death as they are the key witnesses, but we are told they have just sent a message that they are no longer coming,” said a distraught Nyandoro senior, who hinted that the family is considering suing the police.

Chief Svosve said that he was touched by the death of Nyandoro, saying it was going to be very difficult to find a suitable replacement as an aide.

He took the opportunity to banish the brewing and selling of some illicit alcohol known as Chikokiyana in the area which he said is behind such criminal activities as barely four days earlier another unidentified man was found dead in the nearby Mureverwi Village with serious head injuries, suggesting that he was also murdered.

Meanwhile, the Member of Parliament for the area, Cde Patrick Chidhakwa who was part of the mourners at Nyandoro’s funeral, pledged to assist the deceased’s three children with basic requirements such as education.

The suspect was later arrested and taken to court in Marondera where he was remanded him custody.
