Harare-First T Lady Dr Auxillia Mnangagwa has expressed deep sorrow over the Kariba boat tragedy, as the death toll from the disaster continues to rise, leaving families across the country devastated.

The First Lady said her heart remained heavy following the loss of lives in the tragedy, extending her condolences to families who lost their loved ones while commending those involved in the ongoing search and recovery operations.

In a message, Dr Mnangagwa said she was closely following developments and remained in contact with those coordinating the response to the disaster.

“My heart remains deeply heavy as the Kariba boat tragedy continues to bring unimaginable pain to families across our nation,” she said.

“With the number of lives lost now more than 90, I am keeping every bereaved family close to my heart and continuing to follow the search and recovery efforts closely.”

Dr Mnangagwa said she stood with the bereaved families during the difficult period and would continue offering support and guidance to those involved in the response.

“My thoughts remain with every family enduring this painful loss. I continue to engage with those coordinating the response, offering whatever support and guidance I can as we walk together through this difficult time,” she said.

She also offered prayers for the bereaved families and those still waiting for information about missing relatives.

“May God embrace every grieving family, comfort those who have lost loved ones and give strength to all those still hoping for news of their missing relatives,” she said.

The tragedy has triggered a major search and recovery operation, with authorities, emergency services, divers and members of the community working to recover victims and assist survivors.

The disaster has also left families facing the painful task of identifying their loved ones, amid the challenging conditions in which some of the recovered bodies have been found.
