ZIMBABWE Cricket has announced the appointment of experienced New Zealand coach Mark Coles as the substantive head coach of the senior women’s national team.
Coles, who has previously coached the Pakistan and Scotland women’s national sides, also has experience with Scotland’s men’s team and has worked as High-Performance Manager at Cricket Papua New Guinea. He is expected to begin his duties ahead of Zimbabwe’s five-match T20 International series against South Africa, which starts at Queens Sports Club on Friday.
His appointment comes as Zimbabwe’s women’s side enters a new phase following its historic admission into the ICC Women’s Championship earlier this year.
The four-year Championship programme will see Zimbabwe face a demanding international schedule, including tours of India and Bangladesh as well as home series against South Africa, the West Indies, Sri Lanka and Ireland. The competition also serves as the qualification pathway for the 2029 ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup.
Zimbabwe Cricket chairman Tavengwa Mukuhlani said the organisation was determined to put the right structures in place to sustain the growth of the women’s game.
Coles will be supported by Rangarirai Manyande as batting assistant coach, Trevor Phiri as fielding coach, Faith Dube as strength and conditioning coach, Farai Mabasa as physiotherapist, Keith Kulinga as analyst, and former Zimbabwe captain Mary-Anne Musonda as team manager.
At the Under-19 level, Travor Garwe has been retained as head coach, with Nonhlanhla Kamuteku, Malcolm Chikuwa, and Susan Kudzibatira continuing in their respective support roles.
The latest developments underline Zimbabwe Cricket’s growing emphasis on creating a clear pathway from junior cricket to the senior international level.
While the four-run loss in Dar es Salaam denied the Young Lady Chevrons a place at the global showpiece, their spirited campaign, coupled with the strengthening of the senior coaching structure, offers Zimbabwe women’s cricket plenty of reasons for optimism.
For a generation of young players who came within touching distance of World Cup qualification, the defeat could prove less an ending than the beginning of a promising new chapter.
