Harare (New Ziana) –At least four people died around 3 am on Wednesday when a Freightliner truck and an Iveco bus carrying 21 passengers collided head on at the 151 kilometre peg along the Harare-Masvingo road, the police has said.

National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the freightliner truck, which was towing two trailers and heading towards Masvingo, sideswiped a stationary dump truck parked on the side of the road facing the same direction.

Ass Com Nyathi said after side swiping the dump truck, the Freightliner swerved to the right into the lane of the oncoming Iveco bus, resulting in a head on collision.

“At least three passengers from the Iveco bus and the driver of the Freightliner truck died on the spot whilst nineteen others were injured,” he said.

He said the deceased were taken to Chivhu General Hospital mortuary for post mortem whilst the injured were also taken there for medical attention.

Police have since identified the deceased as William Mafuwu, a male adult aged 61 years, Florence Aaron a female adult aged 31 years, Devese Gugu a male infant aged 2 years and Chipo Mandeya a female adult aged 39 years

“We urge motorists to observe the Government curfew regulations and drive safely on the road to avoid accidents as well as saving lives,” said Ass Com Nyathi.
