MARONDERA- In a sad incident at Chigora Village in Chief Chikwaka’s area in Goromonzi, a 59-year-old man raped a 10-year-old neighbour after taking advantage of her mother’s absence.

It is reported that the accused took advantage of the fact that the complainant’s mother was not at home and invited the innocent girl to his bedroom and raped her once.

After the rape, the accused threatened the complainant not to reveal the matter to anyone but the matter came to light on April 12 when the complainant’s mother found her daughter inthe accused’s bedroom.

She became suspicious and asked her what she was doing with the accused person. The complainant then narrated her ordeal.

The following day, the mother escorted her daughter to ZRP Juru where she reported the matter. The complainant was referred to Musami Mission Hospital for medical examination and treatment.
Police spokesperson for Masholand East province, Inspector Simon Chazovachiyi, confirmed the incident saying ZRP Juru arrested the accused person.

In a related story, on April 11, at around 8pm, a mother to a mentally challenged daughter heard footsteps in the complainant’s bedroom.

When she went to find out who was moving in her bedroom, she saw her daughter being sexually abused by the accused person.

The mother asked the accused person what he was doing as she entered into the room. The accused person then reportedly jumbed from the bed and escaped through the window.

Inspector Chazovachiyi said: “In this matter, the informant asked the victim if she was in love with the accused person but she only laughed since she is mentally challenged. A report was made at ZRP Marondera Rural who attended the scene and arrested the accused person.

“It is not a defence that the victim who is mentally challenged consented because at law, mentally challenged person cannot consent to sexual intercourse. We are happy that we managed to arrest the culprit and justice will prevail. We would like to urge the public to make an effort to always protect their children.”
