Harare, (New Ziana) – The Government has intensified efforts to facilitate the safe return of Zimbabwean nationals stranded in South Africa, with authorities mobilising resources and rallying support from humanitarian partners, the private sector and civil society organisations to respond to the unfolding situation.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the Ministry of Local Government and Public Works said it had activated a coordinated humanitarian response through the Department of Civil Protection to assist Zimbabweans currently gathered at various centres in South Africa following recent developments in the neighbouring country.
The initiative is being implemented in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, with efforts focused on ensuring the safe, orderly and dignified repatriation of affected citizens.
“The coordinated support efforts by the Ministries of Local Government and Public Works and Foreign Affairs and International Trade are focused on facilitating the safe and dignified return of affected citizens back home,” the ministry said.
Authorities are mobilising food supplies, temporary shelter and transport services to facilitate the movement of returnees from South Africa to designated reception centres in Zimbabwe.
To strengthen the response, Government has also activated the Emergency Fund to support the repatriation exercise and other humanitarian interventions linked to the operation.
The ministry revealed that more than five organisations have already committed support towards the repatriation programme, highlighting the growing solidarity from stakeholders in addressing the humanitarian challenge.
“We remain grateful for the assistance and solidarity demonstrated thus far by our partners and stakeholders,” the statement said.
As preparations continue, relevant Government departments have been activated at border entry points and within communities to receive returnees and support their reintegration upon arrival.
The ministry stressed that the evolving situation requires a collective national response involving Government institutions, humanitarian agencies, development partners, churches, non-governmental organisations and the private sector.
“The response to this escalating situation requires a whole-of-government and whole-of-society approach,” the ministry said.
Government has since appealed for additional assistance from well-wishers and organisations to bolster ongoing repatriation efforts and other Civil Protection programmes aimed at safeguarding vulnerable communities and responding to national emergencies.
The latest intervention underscores the country’s commitment to protecting its citizens beyond its borders while ensuring those returning home receive the necessary support to rebuild their lives and reintegrate into their communities.
