Harare (New Ziana) – The government exempted coal mining companies from a Covid-19 lockdown taking effect at the weekend, saying their operations were critical to electricity generation.
The government imposed the lockdown, which starts mid-night on Sunday, to better be able to combat the pandemic.
The country heavily relies on thermal power, which is generated through use of coal.
The main thermal power station is in Hwange, where most of the country’s coal mines are also located.
In a statement, Minister of Mines and Mining Development Winston Chitando said the exemption is to ensure uninterrupted electricity generation.
“According to the above order, coal mining companies are exempt in terms of section 2 (c) and 4 (1) (¡) since their operations relate to generation of electricity” he said.
“Notwithstanding the exemption the companies are obliged to observe the key principles of the above order in fighting the Covid-19 pandemic,” Chitando added.
Chitando said other mining companies should apply for possible similar exemptions if they had compelling reasons.
“Mining operations which face implementation challenges are requested to apply for partial exemption to the Ministry of Mines and Mining Development through the Chamber of Mines and Zimbabwe Miners Federation.
“Once the application is lodged with the Chamber of Mines, or Zimbabwe Miners Federation, the mining company may be allowed to continue operating pending a response from Government,” he said.
The Minister added: “All mining companies seeking exemption are therefore urged to contact the Chamber of Mines of Zimbabwe and Zimbabwe Miners Federation for further guidance”.
