Harare (New Ziana)-Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development Minister Dr Anxious Masuka has warned government officials against abusing agricultural inputs meant for distribution to communal farmers for free.
Responding to questions in the National Assembly, Dr Masuka said abuse of government purchased inputs was a criminal offence and law enforcement agents will arrest the offenders.
“Theft of inputs given by the President for onward distribution to communities must stop. From Ministers, government officials and everyone involved; we must stop stealing the inputs meant for the people; they should reach the intended beneficiaries in order to make a difference. Let us all stop it,” he warned.
During the 2022/23 cropping season, police recovered tons of cotton seed and fertiliser that had been destined to farmers for free under the Presidential Inputs programme but sold to private traders.
Masuka also warned farmers against buying fake seed from unverified suppliers.
“Do not buy maize seed from corners. It is usually cheap but fake; they simply paint the seed using paint or things like washing powder,” he warned.
In a related development, the Zimbabwe Republic Police on Tuesday said it has recorded cases of traders and individuals who are openly selling fake maize seed to unsuspecting farmers.
The ZRP said it is working with commercial seed manufacturer Seedco, whose products were being faked including packaging materials, to flush out the culprits.
Some of the maize seed is being sold through informal markets and hardwares.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police has therefore seen it fit to embark on the joint operation with Seedco agronomists to identify fake or counterfeit maize seed throughout the country.
“The police will enforce provisions of the Seed Act chapter 19: 13 and ensure that the law will take its course on individual syndicates and traders found selling fake or counterfeit maize seed,” it said.
