Bulawayo, (New Ziana) –The government will accelerate the development of strategic road corridors, modernise the rail infrastructure and strengthen aviation services as it intensifies efforts to transform the transport network under the National Development Strategy (NDS2), a senior official has said.

Transport and Infrastructural Development deputy Minister Joshua Sacco said this while officially opening the Ministry’s 2026 Mid-Term Strategic Plan Review Workshop on Thursday.

He said the transport sector remained central to achieving the vision to become an upper middle income society by 2030 and called for stronger implementation of projects that improve connectivity, stimulate economic growth and enhance regional integration.

“The near completion of the Harare-Masvingo-Beitbridge Highway demonstrates what we can achieve through focused implementation. We must now accelerate the development of other strategic road corridors, modernise our rail infrastructure, enhance aviation services and unlock the immense potential of inland water transport,” he said.

The two-day workshop brought together officials from parastatals under the Ministry, development partners and key stakeholders to assess progress made during the first half of 2026, and develop strategies to fast-track implementation during the remainder of the year.

Sacco said the review meeting was more than a routine assessment exercise, describing it as a strategic platform to evaluate performance, identify implementation bottlenecks and strengthen the contribution of the Ministry towards national development.

“As we gather here today, we are reminded that our work is not merely about roads, railways, airports and bridges. It is about connecting people to opportunities, enabling trade, supporting industrialisation and improving the quality of life for every Zimbabwean,” he said.

He implored departments, agencies and state-owned enterprises under the Ministry to embrace a culture of performance management and accountability, saying effective delivery would depend on measurable results rather than plans on paper.

“This workshop provides us with an opportunity to critically evaluate our achievements against our strategic objectives, identify areas requiring improvement and reaffirm our collective commitment to excellence in public service delivery,” he said.

Sacco said the Ministry’s programs should remain aligned with the objectives of the NDS2, which seeks to transform the country through sustained infrastructure development and economic growth.

Speaking at the same occasion, Ministry permanent secretary Joy Makumbe called for greater unity and teamwork across the Ministry and its parastatals, saying collective effort was critical to delivering quality transport infrastructure and services.

“Our success depends on working together as one team. Through hard work, collaboration and commitment, we can deliver transport infrastructure and services that support national development and improve the lives of our people,” she said.

Participants at the workshop reviewed progress achieved during the first six months of the year, shared best practices and developed strategies aimed at accelerating the implementation of key transport and infrastructure projects in the second half of 2026.
