Mvuma (New Ziana) -The isolation centre which has been under construction at the Gweru Provincial Hospital in the Midlands province will open its doors this week, an official has said.
Provincial Affairs Minister Larry Mavima told a meeting to raise awareness of Covid-19 recently that the isolation centre, which will have 10 ventilators and 10 beds in the intensive care unit and 24 beds in the high dependence unit, would be the second best infectious diseases facility in the country after Wilkins Hospital in the capital.
“Government is working flat out to curb Covid-19 cases in the country. To solidify the efforts, the Provincial Isolation Center to be stationed at Gweru General Hospital is close to completion,” he said.
“The isolation centre will not be ordinary as it will compare with other regional centers and in Zimbabwe it will come second to Wilkins Hospital in Harare.”
Unki Mine availed $10 million while the government chipped in with $16 million towards construction of the centre.
“The Ascot Infectious Disease Hospital which has since been handed over to the government from council is also undergoing massive renovations to take care of mild symptoms,” he said.
Meanwhile, Mavima said Mkoba Teacher’s College and Gweru Polytechnic College quarantine centres had been cleared in preparation for opening of schools and had been disinfected.
