Gweru (New Ziana)-The Midlands Province’s two biggest cities, Gweru and Kwekwe, on Friday ignored opposition calls for protests against the government, and functioned as normal without disturbances.

The normality in the two cities mirrored the situation elsewhere in the country where the calls for protests were similarly ignored.

The opposition had called for the protests, citing corruption in government.

But these were unmasked as a disguise to violently seize power.

In Gweru and Kwekwe, residents either stayed home or went about their usual business routines.

The big retail shops such as OK, Pick and Pay and Spar supermarkets opened, but some smaller businesses closed for the day.

In addition, municipal and other essential workers exempted from Covid-19 lockdown restrictions reported for duty without hindrance.

But there was a heavy police presence in the two cities to ensure security, and thwart any possible disturbances.
