Gweru, (New Ziana) – Seventy-six Gweru mourners have been fined $500 each for defying Covid-19 restrictions for funeral gatherings, police have said.

Huge crowds gathered for the funeral of Tatenda Pasinyore of Mtapa on Saturday in defiance of the Covid-19 stipulated limit of 30 people.

This prompted police to forcibly disperse the mourners, leading to violent crushes which led to the arrests.

Pasinyore is suspected to have been assaulted to death by police after arresting him for violating Covid-19 lockdown restrictions.

The mourners were freed after paying the fines.

In order to help contain Covid-19, the government has limited funeral attendance to 30 people.
