Handball back on track

MARONDERA- Despite effects of the corona-virus pandemic that affected sport and other
recreation-related activities, the handball sport code is slowly finding its feet in Mashonaland
East province.
Tafirenyika Dikaninifawu told Chaminuka Sport that although the province does not
currently have a league, it is part of a Northern regional league that is made up of clubs from
Mashonaland East, Harare Metropolitan and Mashonaland Central provinces.
He said: “Handball games were affected by the Covid 19 pandemic and for the past two
years, there was little action. The sport was mainly played in schools and tertiary institutions
with the requirement being full vaccination of all athletes and technical staff.
“At the moment, we don’t have a provincial league but we have a regional league called the
Northern Region League which comprise of Harare Metropolitan, Mash Central and Mash
East.”
In the regional league, Mashonaland East represented by six clubs namely Cobra from
Uzumba-Maramba-Pfungwe, Macheke Pythons from Macheke, Nyadire Teachers College
from Mutoko, Kushinga Phikelela from Marondera, Marondera Tornadoes from Marondera
and Goromonzi Eagles from Goromonzi.
However, Dikanifawu said the clubs lack sponsorship and fail to compete at their level best.
