Harare,  (New Ziana) – The City of Harare has launched a crackdown on businesses operating without licenses and those not paying municipal rates.

In a public notice, acting Town Clerk Phakamile Moyo said the operation aims to enforce compliance with city by-laws across the Central Business District, industrial areas, and suburbs.

“The City of Harare is clamping down on lawlessness and illegal business operations in and around the city,” said Moyo without mentioning the timeline for the blitz.

As part of the enforcement blitz, the City Council will begin disconnecting water services to commercial and industrial properties that are in arrears or operating without valid business licenses.

“The City Health Department shall inspect premises and shut down those operating without running water, in contravention of the Public Health Act,” he added.

Moyo also urged business owners to settle outstanding bills and obtain the required licenses. “Those without valid business licenses are urged to urgently visit our Rowan Martin Building to regularise their operations and clear any arrears,” he said.

The operation comes amid reports that the City Council is owed over ZiG5 billion in rates, the bulk of which is attributed to residential clients. However, residents’ associations argue that many residents are unwilling to pay for services that are not being provided.
