Harare, (New Ziana) – The City of Harare said on Monday it will increase parking fees in the Central Business District to $70 per hour from the current $50 effective January 2 next year.

Earlier in the year, the city tried to hike the fees to an equivalent of US$1 per hour and there was a huge outcry from the motoring public leading to a reversal of the decision.

The new charges take the fees closer to US$1, according to the official exchange rate which stands at $81.79 to the local currency.

“This notice serves to inform the motoring public that, on-street parking tariff in Harare CBD has been adjusted from ZW$50 to ZW$70 per hour,” City Parking said.

“The adjustments are with effect from the 2nd of January, 2021.”

City Parking is a private company wholly owned by the City of Harare and says its mission is to “de-congest the city and bring order on our streets and bus termini again.”

The entity is however still far off from achieving its mission as the car population continues to rise, with peak hours resembling a jungle.

Motorists have criticised council for continuously hiking parking fees without offering commensurate services.
