Bulawayo, (New Ziana)- Three people died while eighteen others sustained injuries on Wednesday night when a Stallion Cruise bus collided head-on with a truck along the Bulawayo-Victoria Falls highway.

Bulawayo provincial police spokesperson Inspector Nomalanga Msebele confirmed the incident, which happened at around 6:30 PM, adding that two died on the spot while the other one died at the hospital.

According to police, the bus coming from Binga to Bulawayo, veered into oncoming traffic while attempting to overtake a Volvo Haulage truck, leading to a head-on collision with an oncoming truck.

She said prior to the fatal collision, the bus reportedly sideswiped the trailer of the truck it was attempting to overtake.

“On June 11, 2025 at around 630 PM, the driver of the bus who was coming from Binga to Bulawayo, encroached into the lane of oncoming traffic after trying to overtake a Volvo haulage truck resulting in the head on collision with another Haulage truck which was coming from the opposite direction,” she said.

Insp Msebele said that the impact ejected a male passenger from the bus into the cab of the truck, killing him on the spot, while a female occupant in the truck died from collision impact.

“A total of 18 passengers sustained various injuries and were rushed to hospital for treatment. The bus sustained deformed bonnet, front fender, bumper and head lamps, damaged driver’s side door, shattered windscreen and a deflated front right tyre. The oncoming haulage truck sustained deformed bonnet, damaged driver’s side door, shattered windscreen and a deflated front right tyre,” she said.

She attributed the accident to speeding, overtaking error, inattention and misjudgment by the bus driver, adding that a culpable homicide charge has been pressed against him.

“As police, we urge all motorists to maintain constant vigilance while driving, strictly observe speed limits, exercise patience in traffic situations, and comply fully with all traffic laws, precautions that are essential to prevent tragic and unnecessary loss of life,” Insp Msebele said.
