Justice Bere fired

Harare, (New Ziana) – President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Thursday fired Supreme Court Judge, Justice Francis Bere for gross misconduct.

The decision followed recommendations by a tribunal that was chaired by Retired Justice Simbi Mubako which was set up to inquire into the judge’s suitability to continue holding office.

Justice Bere had been on suspension since March this year when President Mnangagwa set up the tribunal. The final report of the tribunal’s inquiry was handed over to the Head of State early Thursday.

Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet, Dr Misheck Sibanda said the tribunal had recommended the removal of Justice Bere from office “for acts of gross misconduct.”

“His Excellency, the President, accordingly in terms of Section 187 (8) of the Constitution has removed the Honourable Judge from office with immediate effect,” he said.

The tribunal was set up after a complaint was raised with the Judicial Services Commission by a lawyer who was representing the Zimbabwe National Roads Administration in a civil case against a company allegedly owned by Justice Bere’s relatives called Fremus Enterprises.

The judge is alleged to have called the lawyer to ensure a speedy resolution of the matter.
