Kwekwe (The Times-New Ziana)- The KweKwe District Civil Protection Unit(CPU)has warned residents to be on high alert for flooding and other rain-related disasters.

The district has already recorded more than 20 cases of destruction of property by hailstorms.

CPU chairperson Fortune Mupungu said disaster committees had been activated to raise awareness in their respective wards, and the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education had been engaged to raise awareness in schools.

“We have experienced some rain related disasters in the district which destroyed about 20 households and six schools so we have already activated our CPU ward committees to raise awareness in their areas and also report timeously in case of a disaster.”

He urged school authorities to build high quality standard buildings that cannot be easily destroyed by storms.

“We also urge schools to maintain high quality standard buildings and there should be constant monitoring of roofs and classroom blocks so that we will not encounter disasters.

“All schools should pay required levies to the local authority, Zibagwe Rural District Council so that the council will be well resourced to respond to disasters,” said Mupungu.

He also appealed to school children in rural areas not to cross flooded rivers and bridges to avoid loss of life.

“We have also engaged the Ministry of Education to assist us in warning children not to cross flooded rivers and bridges to avoid loss of life.”

Meanwhile, victims of the recently experienced storms in Zhombe have received food aid from the district office and $9000,00 had already been disbursed to assist two schools that have been affected by the disaster.

“Survivors of the disaster in ward 9 have so far received grain and rice and $9000 has been issued to assist Musilahove school and Sidingulwazi Primary School that have been damaged by the storms on November 11,” said Mupungu.
