Kwekwe (New Ziana) – Two men from Kwekwe town, Midlands province were recently arrested after they were involved in a fatal accident while speeding away with a car they had just stolen.
Midlands Provincial police spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko said the two suspects Joseph Jiri (20) and Innocent Mawere (28) hit a pedestrian as they approached the Central Business District in the stolen car before it overturned.
The pedestrian died on admission to Kwekwe General Hospital.
Insp. Mahoko said the two, who are currently receiving treatment at a local hospital under police guard, will be charged with theft of a motor vehicle and culpable homicide.
“Police confirms the arrest of two men aged 20 and 28 in what appears more of fiction than reality in a case where they stole a motor vehicle from a man who was seeing a sick relative. As they sped away, they got involved in a road accident, killing another man, injuring themselves and extensively damaging the stolen car,” he said.
“They were arrested at the road accident scene in Kwekwe town on Monday 13 December 2021.”
The police said on the day, the victim parked his purple Honda Fit at his sick relative’s gate and went inside the house, leaving his keys on the ignition.
“It is suspected that the two men Jiri and Mawere stole the vehicle and the latter drove it towards Kwekwe town. Upon reaching a point opposite Fidelity Life Assurance Building, he ran over a man who was walking by the roadside.”
