Harare (New Ziana) –Construction of the Mabvuku Interchange, located along the Harare-Mutare Highway, a key route to for regional trade through the strategic Beira Corridor, is nearing completion, and is set to transform traffic flow along the busy road.

Just like the Trabablas Interchange along the Harare-Beitbridge highway situated at the intersection of Chitungwiza Road, High Glen Road, and Simon Mazorodze Road, the Mabvuku Interchange will also offer long-awaited relief to motorists and improve safety at one of the most congested junctions in the capital.

In a post on its National Development Strategy 2 (NDS2) X handle, the government said the interchange has long been a bottleneck for both local commuters and long-distance haulage traffic. Its near-completion marks a major milestone in Zimbabwe’s ongoing road infrastructure modernisation drive.

“The progress on the Mabvuku Interchange is a significant development for the Harare-Mutare highway. As a critical node for traffic heading into the eastern suburbs and toward the border, its completion will drastically reduce the congestion and safety risks previously associated with that junction,” it said.

Transport experts say the new grade-separated interchange will fundamentally change how traffic moves through the area by separating local and highway-bound vehicles, with the design eliminating the need for risky crossings and turns that have historically caused congestion and frequent accidents at the junction.

Beyond easing congestion, the project is expected to significantly enhance road safety.

High-volume T-junctions such as the old Mabvuku turn-off are often prone to side-impact collisions, particularly involving fast-moving highway traffic, and the new infrastructure reduces these risks by removing direct crossing conflicts.

The government said improved traffic flow at Mabvuku will shorten transit times for goods moving between Zimbabwe and the Mozambican port of Beira, lowering transport costs and boosting efficiency in supply chains.

It said the project forms part of its broader #KilometerByKilometer road rehabilitation and upgrade program, which is steadily delivering upgrades across the country’s major transport routes. Similar gains have already been recorded along other key corridors, including the Harare-Beitbridge Highway.

Infrastructure development experts say such projects are not only improving mobility but also reshaping Zimbabwe’s logistics backbone, positioning the country as a more competitive transit hub within the Southern African region.

As work progresses towards completion, motorists and businesses alike are expected to reap the benefits of faster, safer and more reliable travel along one of the nation’s most important highways.
