MARONDERA- First Lady Dr Auxilia Mnangagwa last week challenged learners in the province to appreciate the realities and opportunities that are available as they choose their career paths.

In that regard, she said, there is genuine need for adequate career guidance for the learners.

Dr Auxillia Mnangagwa, who has a passion to tackle child abuse, drug abuse, child marriages and school drop-outs, said this at a career guidance show held at the Marondera Show Ground and attended by more than 2 000 primary and secondary school learners drawn from 163 schools from all districts in the province.

“You must choose your careers wisely from well-informed positions. That is why we are having this session as it will equip you with vital knowledge and guide you into future professional routes that you desire. This session will help you to make conscious decisions as you choose your career paths.

“Drugs have been taking a toll on many young people and that is destroying their future. There are ills of society that are rampant such as early childhood marriages and some young people end up dropping out of school. You must not be forced into early marriages and always report any physical and abusive behaviour perpetrated on you to the responsible authorities.

“Self-introspect and ask yourself what you want to be in life and always make the right decisions that will help you to positively shape your future. On the employment market, various opportunities have requirements and you have to appreciate the realities. Children must be groomed and raised the way we were raised and must know where they are coming from and heading to,” Dr Mnangagwa said.

The Minister of State for Mashonaland East Provincial Affairs and Devolution Dr Aplonia Munzverengwi applauded the First Lady for taking time to interact with learners from the province and spoke glowingly about her programmes.

“As Mashonaland East province, we appreciate this session as it comes at a time when most of our young people have been affected by drugs and substance abuse and early adulthood. The programme is a key milestone that assists the learners to acquire cognitive knowledge, information, skills and experience necessary to identify career options. In the end, the learner’s career decisions will then assist in their social, financial and emotional well-being throughout their lives.”
Dr Munzverengwi said the programme will be cascaded to all districts in the province.

The well-subscribed career guidance programme was attended by legislators, government officials, Zanu PF provincial leadership, traditional leaders, private and public entities’ representatives.
