Harare, (New Ziana) – Marondera-based Unimax pool club has stormed into the national pool finals after emerging victorious at the Mashonaland East provincial champions league tournament held in Domboshava over the weekend.

For their effort, the all-conquering team went home US$400 and R2000 richer, and a floating trophy courtesy of Primus and Delta Corporation.

In second place was Hillrise pool club from Murewa, and Club 99 from Domboshava came out third and King Tight pool club, also from Marondera, was number five.

Hillrise and Club 99 will now join Unimax Pool Club to represent Mashonaland East at the national finals to be held in Chinhoyi between 23 and 24 this month where they will battle it out with other provincial champions from across the country for the national honours.

The knock out tournament was played on a singles round robin basis where 15 clubs from across Mashonaland East took part.

In an interview with New Ziana, Maxwell Mashayamombe of Unimax Hardware which sponsors the pool club, said their journey was not a bed of roses as they travelled to the provincial finals with a depleted team of four players without substitutes.

The players were Maxiwell Mashayamombe, Itayi Saukwindi, Amon Chirenje and John Mukute.

Mashayamombe said they were going to build from their Domboshava performance when they visit Chinhoyi and promised to bring the national trophy to Mashonaland East.

He also said his wish was to groom more young players and help in the fight against drug abuse through the sport.

This is not the first time that Unimax Pool Club has won a provincial tournament.

In 2022, the team was crowned champions in the Mashonaland East provincial club knockout tournament after beating bitter rivals Club 99 at a tournament held at Makotore Leisure Resort in Marondera in which 20 teams from across the province took part.
