Man assaults granny over witchcraft

MARONDERA- Police in Mashonaland East province have arrested a Mudzi man for
assaulting his 84-year-old grandmother whom he accused for bewitching and
bringing misfortunes in his life.
Charles Twini Dick assaulted and seriously injured his grandmother Finita Samu who
is now admitted in hospital.
Police spokesperson for Mashonaland East Province Inspector Simon Chazovachiyi
confirmed the incident.
It is alleged that on October 11, Dick was heard by one of his relatives saying he
must kill someone on that day as he was holding a new hoe. The relative is said to
have rushed home to alert the grandmother, who was bathing at the time, of what
Dick had said
“It said when the grandmother was informed she told the relative to quickly call a
neighbour so that they try to calm Dick. At the same moment, the grandmother tried
to rush inside the house but Dick caught up with her and struck her several times on
the head. It is alleged that the grandmother fell down and Dick continued with the
assault,” Inspector Chazovachiyi said.
The provincial police spokesperson further stated that the accused, Dick, fled from
the scene living his grandmother for the dead.
‘’When the villagers arrived they found Gogo Samu on the ground and injured, and
they rushed her to Nyamapanda clinic for treatment. She was quickly referred to
Kotwa district hospital for further management.
Inspector Chazovachiyi said Dick was accusing his grandmother for witchcraft.
He urged the public to always find peaceful ways of solving disputes and
misunderstanding than resorting to violence.
“We urge members of the public to refrain from using violence when solving
domestic or any other matters and it is advisable for aggrieved parties to engage a
third part to mediate on their misunderstandings. They can seek counselling from
church leaders, traditional leaders and other members of their families or police so
that the use violence or any other means of force can be avoided,” Inspector
Chazovachiyi said.
