Man drowns trying to imitate police sub-aqua unit

Gweru(The Times-New Ziana)-In a sad development, a man drowned while trying to retrieve the body of a colleague who had also drowned the previous day in the Mtshabezi Dam.

Midlands police spokesperson inspector Joel Goko said police in Gweru were investigating two cases of drowning in which Anderson Mbano (23) drowned on November 6 this year while chasing after an eland, while Aaron Mayela (28) drowned the following day trying to retrieve the body of Mbano.

Inspector Goko said the two underestimated the dangers they could face if they got into the water.

“The first incident occurred on 6 November 2019 at Mtshabezi Dam, where Mbano of Plot 42 Ruby in Gweru was hunting in the company of his two friends,” he said.

“They saw an eland and chased after it and the animal ran into Mtshabezi Dam. Mbano entered into the dam pursuing the eland and he drowned. A report was made to the police and the scene was attended,” he added.

He said while the police sub-aqua unit was retrieving the body of Mbano, Mayela, who was watching from a distance, then entered into the water trying to swim across to where the body was being retrieved and he also drowned.

“The sub aqua unit managed to retrieve all the bodies and they were taken to Gweru Provincial Hospital for post-mortem and investigations are still underway,” said inspector Goko.
