Masvingo (New Ziana) – ZANU PF primary elections for local government and parliament in Masvingo province have been
rescheduled from Saturday to Sunday due to logistical challenges,allowing the over 1 400 contestants registered more time to pitch for votes.
Elsewhere in the country, except Midlands province, the party was holding internal polls on Saturday to select candidates to stand on its ticket for parliament and local government in the general election expected to be held by mid-year.
In the Midlands province, as in Masvingo, the elections were pushed to Sunday over logistical challenges as well, much to the delight of aspiring candidates who now have an extra day to campaign.
Masvingo, like many other provinces, registered overwhelming interest by party members to represent it in the national elections for local government and parliament due either in July or August.
A total of 1 457 candidates submitted applications to run in the primary elections in Masvingo province, the highest number ever recorded for such polls in the region.
Party officials say this pointed to strong support for ZANU PF among the electorate, lured by its good economic and social policies and programmes.
Voting in Masvingo will take place at 560 polling stations set up in all the province’s seven districts.
